Do these potholes ruin the smooth ride to your marketing success? Some of these potholes can get huge. Big enough to stop your business in its tracks sink the vehicle of your success and break the axle of your goals.

1. Ineffective spending of marketing dollars

A large majority of businesses spend their marketing dollars on things such as yellow pages ads, newspaper ads, radio spots, or other mass media methods. This is the most common as well as the most costly mistake made by most businesses.

The problem with this method is that the cost per lead is high because they use a ‘blanket’ approach in trying to reach your potential customers. The number of people they reach is high but the majority are not qualified nor interested in what you have to offer.

A better use of your marketing dollar would be to create a targeted campaign that you’re certain will reach prospects that are both interested and qualified.

    2. Loosing sight of your focus purpose and direction

Why did you start your business? What goals did you want to achieve? What did you decide your measure of success would be? When you started your business, answering these questions were vital to defining your purpose. To determine and evaluate your direction, purpose and goals, you had to have had a clearly defined path. It is imperative that you revisit your answers to these questions to stay focused on your purpose and your direction will remain clear.

      3. Lack of proper marketing skills

It is easy to place an ad on the radio, on the internet, or in a newspaper, but is it effective?

Is it doing the job you want it to do? The most important starting point is that you prepare a marketing plan and that the plan is realistic, growing step by step as your experience grows. The planning should be ready before you spent a first cent. Realistically it is impossible to make a full marketing plan, the wise choice would be to make a plan for the first step, see how it works and then proceed to the next step. While you are implementing your first step your goal should be to study and learn more marketing skills to advance your knowledge base. In other words put yourself in school. Check regularly on your first step to insure it is doing what you intended it do.

        4. Not developing an entrepreneurial mindset

Developing an entrepreneurial mindset is key to your marketing success. You must sell yourself on yourself. Read books like Rich Dad, Poor Dad by Robert Kiyosaki it is a good motivational book to start out with. Don’t get hung up on ‘what if’ and ‘could have done’. Everybody has a learning curve and part of the curve is making mistakes. Keep in mind you learn from your mistakes. Don’t give in to your fears. Everybody has them, they give us our reality checks, but do not let them stop you or hold you back on the road to your marketing success.

Remember to keep your goals realistic. Keep learning. Don’t be afraid to get help when you need it and keep the potholes filled.
