Hands down, the most important and best way to build your online business is through creating a list of subscribers with email. It sounds very elementary, but this is one of the easiest ways internet marketers can gain their share of the market. I am assuming that you have an auto responder or are planning on using one with your marketing campaign.

Why is building a list so important? A targeted mailing list is the center of your business because it allows you to follow up with potential and existing customers. It doesn’t matter how much money you put into advertising and promotion, if you let your prospects leave your site without getting their contact information, then you are throwing advertising dollars away. You might have heard this before also – it usually takes seven to twelve exposures to a message or product before a prospect will decide to make a purchase. You just cannot allow prospects to get away from your sales message if you want to make an income.

So the way to go about this is by building an “opt-in” and “thank you” web page so that you can not only get your prospects information but also pre sell to them as many times as needed. An “opt-in” landing page or a “squeeze page” as it is also called, is a simple website that is designed to gather your prospects information so that they are subscribed into your “opt-in” email list.

There are 2 reasons why you should use an “opt-in” landing page:

To capture the most amount of prospects into your sales funnel and turn them into hungry, ready to buy subscribers.

To pre qualify your prospects before giving them your sales information, and before letting them see your affiliate link to the merchant’s sales page if you are affiliate marketing.

Email “opt-in” lists are excellent sales generators. It is far more effective to get your prospect onto your “opt-in” list and follow up with them, than it is to try to convert them on the front page of your web site.

The “rule of thumb” for this technique is “the simpler, the better”. What you need is a headline and sub headlines which draw attention the product you are offering. You need a subscription form along with some legal disclaimers and privacy statements. And then you need your name. That’s it! You can check out my opt-in page to see an example at the end of this article by clicking on the url in my “bio” or signature area.

The second part to the “opt-in” landing page is the “thank you” page. This is the page that your subscriber will see after “opting-in” to your list when they enter their name and email address. What will happen is that when your prospect “opts-in” on your web site, they will be redirected to a “thank you” page and receive an email from your auto responder.

You are going to want to keep the page clean and simple. This page is what solidifies your new relationship with your prospect and builds rapport. Rapport is essential to building a responsive email list and you want to start the process right away. You need to include a “Thank You” headline, along with transparency which would be a picture of yourself. Your language should also be personalized and warming to the prospect. Then provide what you promised such as a link to the product that you are selling along with any bonuses that you offered on the “opt-in” page.

This is just a simple overview of how an “opt-in” system works. It is the most effective way of marketing on the internet. I hope that this gives you a good starting point in understanding just how powerful email marketing really is. If you are not using this type of system, I encourage you to do more research on this subject. I wish you great success!

When you are sending out your next email campaign you should take a moment to review how you are using links in your email message. Remember when we are talking about links we mean the text links and not images or buttons within your email content.

Here are some useful tips to use in your next newsletter or announcement:

Links should be obvious and clearly marked meaning they should follow standard colors so they stand out from the actual content. This way you make sure if readers are just scanning they will see them.

Try to avoid the “click here” variety so links can be more relative. Example: Do you need help marketing? links to: http://www.needhelpmarketing.com
Using this technique will definitely lead to more clickthroughs, because you are asking the question and then linking directly to the answer this way.

Link to your website or blog content to promote different websites and different resources you may have available. Sometimes your website and blog will be on two different websites. Such as www.companyname.com and blog.companyname.com If you want to promote these resources you can cross link them. For example within your email newsletter you could list Top Articles or Most read articles X,Y, and Z.

Anaylze which Content or Links were most Popular to better understand your readers and their interests. In fact you might be able to get a lot of feedback from this exercise and determine which information is more valuable. Whether that be product information, company press releases and announcements or even industry news. When armed with this information you can create better and more read content on your next email message.

Permanent links add consistency for your standard contact us, unsubscribe link, share with your network, contact us on twitter. etc. Make sure they are always located in the same place in each of your emails to make them easier to find.

Some readers will be reading on their mobile phone – with more cell phones being able to read email messages this practice is becoming far more popular. So try not to use too many links but also try to add text for those reading the email with no images. You could include teasers to provide an intro to the content you are linking to. Example: “Top Brands recently revealed their marketing secrets” and then provide a link.

Links can be shared with others by either referencing your email message by forwarding it to someone else. Or perhaps the online version of your newsletter will be shared on Twitter or Facebook with others. Also if another website copies your material you will also see back links (links back to your site) to your website from theirs if you include embedded links so it can have its advantages for generating more click traffic. Ultimately leading to more website visitors on your site.

I am sure their other great ideas for using links in your emails so please do share some ideas in the comments below.

From newsletters to order confirmations, email is an increasingly important aspect of commerce. However, the e-business industry is still so inexperienced about email that even following these basic tips will put anyone ahead of most of the industry. Here are the rules and standards in writing effective emails.

Don’t recycle traditional direct mail copy. Even if it was successful.

Understand that the Internet is a completely new medium. The copy that pulled high response rates in the world of direct postal marketing doesn’t get read on the Net. Especially not as email.

Here are the rules to effective email copywriting:

The subject is the headline: Write a succinct subject ‘headline’ – 3 to 5 words. Your subject determines whether your email gets read – or not. Tricky headlines (not related to your message) don’t work. Internet users are smart and they know exactly what they want. They resent being tricked. It’s a tough way to start a relationship.

Make it personal: What exactly is spam? It’s any email message that the recipient deems uninteresting or irrelevant — regardless of who sent it.

People on the Internet want personal notes. Write for an audience of one. Use common conversation, and avoid formal speech. Think of email as a way to service clients, enhance relationships, or tease them into interacting with you.

Remember you don’t have to be making a sale every time you talk to them. Positioning yourself as an expert can keep you at the top of mind for future purchases or better yet, for referrals.

Do feel free to make your e-mail fun and irreverent, if this is appropriate for the customer and the moment.

Don’t be overly casual and risk being disrespectful to your audience with the wrong tone.

Give them an incentive to act: By containing a hook, the e-mail makes it easy for a customer to understand the point of the email. The customer is more likely to respond if the choice is clear: act or don’t act to get the specified benefit. Customers are less likely to act, understand, or otherwise have a good experience, if they have to spend time figuring out the point of the email.

Do refine the hook to express the idea or message clearly and simply.

Don’t rely on jargon or indirect wording to express the hook.

Include a call to action: Tell people what you want them to do. Don’t leave them wondering what to do next. Point them to your ‘most desired action’. Otherwise they may just surf around and forget what they’re trying to accomplish. Then they bail.

If you are providing information, be sure to let them know they can email or call you if they want further information. Leave the conversation open ended and easy to reply to.

Get to the point: Keep it short and simple. Don’t drone on and on for several paragraphs … or pages. People on the Internet want information quickly and clearly. Paragraphs should be no more than 4 – 6 lines. Keep total length under 300 words.

Just as the hook provides focus for the email, so should the rest of the email refer to the hook for focus. For example, an email telling customers that there is a sale on a particular product line on an e-commerce site should do just that — tell customers about the sale.

This same email should not be considered an opportunity to inform customers of every promotion, feature, or tidbit of corporate news. Customers tend to scan emails, and if several propositions are presented, even the hook will go unnoticed.

Do stick to a single subject in the email.

Don’t try to incorporate as many elements as possible.

Do use dashes or bullets to express lists of ideas or section headings.

Don’t require users to read long continuous blocks of text.State the most important things first: Customers will start reading an email from the beginning and read the introduction to see if it’s worth spending more of their time. Readers tend to pay less and less attention to what is written as they scan more quickly through the rest of the email.

To make sure customers read the most relevant information, put the most important information (the hook) at the top, followed by the most important supporting information. Each successive paragraph will receive less and less of the reader’s attention and should contain less and less important information. As soon as the hook is well enough supported, end the email.

Do provide the customer the most important information at the beginning of the email.

Don’t “save up” the key information for the middle or end of the email.

An email must have a good reason for being sent; otherwise it’s better to not send it. The hook of an email is the single thought or message conveyed by that email and should be stated in the first sentence or two.

Use your website: Drive people to your website. Don’t try to close the sale in the email. You want people to have (and ask) more questions. Questions require interaction, and interaction promotes relationships.

Build relationships: Few (if any) customers worth having are interested in a ‘one night stand’. Have a long-term relationship objective in mind. Listen to your customers. Treat them like you’d like to be treated (so long as you’re not a masochist…).

Follow through: Do what you say. Put your hands and feet where your mouth is. Deliver on your offer, because it’s an ever-increasingly small world.

Always offer an option to unsubscribe: Email should only be sent when customers have requested information or if there is something noteworthy to tell them. Even with this level of permission there will still be people who will want to unsubscribe from the email list or newsletter.

Always offer the option to unsubscribe. As an emerging convention, customers can now typically expect to see unsubscribe instruction as the last item at the bottom of the email, following the signature and P.S.

Spell Check: You are positioning yourself as an expert – do not be tempted to send out the email quick. Run spell check! Have someone else read it to see if your message is grammatically correct before you hit the send button!

E-mail marketing is one of the most effective forms of direct marketing available because of its fast “call to action”. Contrary to a conventional direct marketing campaign in which promotional offers are sent directly to a postal address, E-mails are directly delivered to a “live system”. A live system means a system in which a person is connected to the internet and if he is interested in the offer he can respond fast. A direct mail delivered to postal address doesn’t guarantee this. A prospect may need to go to a shop or call a phone number to know more about the offer and order. This leads to procrastination and it’s a human behavior. In an E-mail campaign a prospect can quickly act upon from an e-commerce platform.

Some practical strategies are listed here:
1. Subject line of the email should be attractive, interesting with a call to action. The action we expect here is – opening of our email by a prospect. If the subject line is not catchy people won’t respond to it. Have 3 different subject lines for a campaign. Try 3 in different lists and measure the response rate. Later choose the one with better or best response.

2. Headline of the E-mail should be descriptive and brief at the same time. You got what I meant? Headline should tell what the whole offer is about. It can be like a one liner of your whole campaign objective.

3. Formatting of contents – there are many templates available by default. If you are interested in branding try creating a custom email template for yourself. It helps creating a unique identity.

4. Contents inside a template should be arranged in such a way that it describes every important aspect of your promotional offer. Don’t miss any important and interesting point.

5. Footer section should carry additional links which provides more information on the topic/offer. You should supply as much positive information as possible. Remember the old wise sales proverb – “The more you tell, the more you sell”

6. “Hotspot” should be the area where you must place your call to action. Why hotspot? According to research a “hotspot” is an area of webpage where most users do sth about it – like a click or points mouse for long time etc. It is highly likely to get a click from the hotspot area. A call to action of an email campaign often redirects the user to an ecommerce platform where he/she can claim the offer. It makes sense to place this call to action button in the hotspot of your email template.

7. Be unique while offering to subscribers. A subscriber will be interested more in the offer if it’s something unique to the subscribers as a whole. A uniquely designed offer will create more impact than a general category offer.

8. Don’t ever annoy a subscriber by frequently mailing them. Be specific and open about frequency of mailing promotional offers.

It’s an emerging debate that looks set to become more widespread in the future – which direct marketing method is most effective: traditional direct mail campaigns, or new generation email marketing?

Direct mail is sent to businesses and consumers every day and is used by a very wide range of organisations and industries. A mailing in the post, often accompanied by a letter, has become a proven and accepted way of targeting your audience, with consistent conversion rates of about 1-5%. However in recent years direct mail has attracted criticism over the environmental impact it can have, and the annoyance caused by misdirected mailings.

Email marketing using opt in data is less widely used at the moment, but is growing more rapidly in popularity than almost any other direct marketing tool. A growing range of good quality opt in, and in some cases double opt in lists are becoming available, as are a wide range of email broadcast services. But this new marketing medium has already been tainted by abuse and association with the practice of spamming or junk mailing.

So what are the relative merits of each of these contrasting direct marketing methods?

The Benefits of Email Marketing

Email marketing is direct marketing at its most impactful. Your message lands directly in the inbox of your recipient, your message can be personalised, and even targeted to individual recipients.
Email marketing can be timed not just to the day, but to the hour and minute, in order to reach consumers just when they are likely to make a buying decision. Email marketing can also be tracked in detail, even to the amount of people who open and read your email, or who forward it to a friend.
Because it is solely a digital medium, email marketing is more environmentally friendly, and has a far lower carbon footprint than other marketing methods.
Email marketing can be very cost effective as it does not need costly mailing houses, production, postage and so on. However data costs can be higher that traditional list rental for direct mail, and email campaigns also require the use of a broadcasting partner.
Email marketing is highly effective in growing online sales for e-commerce sites – in just a few clicks the recipient can act on impulse and buy from your site. It can also be used to drive traffic to b2b sites that aim to collect leads and enquiries.

The Benefits of Direct Mail
Direct mailshots are a tangible and physical representative of your brand, which can be held in the recipient’s hands. A mailer with high production values can say much about your brand, just through its size, feel and texture.
Direct mail is well established and proven as a marketing tool. Consumers and businesses are used to sending and receiving marketing messages in the post, and are receptive to the messages they convey.
Direct mail can also be used to increase your online sales from your website – increasing numbers of mail order companies are finding that their offline catalogues sent in the post are becoming increasingly effective at driving consumers online to order, instead of by mail or phone.
Quality direct mail data is generally more affordable and more widespread, and does not come with fixed broadcast costs and fewer issues over the opt in procedure. The direct mail industry is also far more mature with a wider range of lists and suppliers available.
Direct mail does not have to fight its way through complex spam and junk mail filters used in many email programs.

One fact is universal – any direct marketing campaign using direct mail, email marketing, or for that matter telemarketing, needs great quality data that is accurate and well targeted.

A study by Sharpe Partners, an interactive marketing agency, revealed that 89% of adult Internet users in America share content with others via e-mail. This is excellent news for those companies who use self-propelling word-of-mouse” e-mail techniques to sell their products.

The study generated some interesting results regarding the type of content that is most often forwarded, as well. The most popular content is humorous material.

The second most popular category is news, followed by healthcare and medical information, religious and spiritual material, games, business and personal finance information and sports/hobbies… in that order. So it is easy to see that humor is the best content for your viral e-mail campaign.

Cartoons, jokes and funny video clips are among the things that can be added to an e-mail to insure that it will go viral. People will want to pass along something that makes them laugh.

They are a lot more likely to hit the forward button and send your email to their friends and relatives if it is an “advertainment” rather than an advertisement.

Not along ago, about 35 million people got an e-mail containing a picture taken in Disneyland. It took a minute to see it but there was Donald Duck lying prone in front of the famous Cinderella Castle. The title of the picture was “Bird Flu has hit Disneyland”. It was a viral e-mail advertising Disneyland and used the edgy strategy of making light of what’s serious… and it works.

I’d guess that most people who own a computer have seen that picture… and thus the advertisement for Disneyland. The bird flu epidemic is newsworthy and has the potential to attract an enormous amount of attention to any brand that might, for whatever reason, associate itself with it.

Remember that people are much more likely to share a joke or a funny picture than anything else so you would be well advised to include humor in your e-mail campaign.
