			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>I have recently heard a sales manager saying, &#8220;the sales person&#8217;s job is to bring in customers. If product quality is bad, management will take care of it. Sales people should spend less time commenting on product quality.&#8221;</p>
<p>If a sales person is doing many other things other than selling, you can say that the sales person is not doing his job. However, if many sales people are doing so, then perhaps you need more investigation.</p>
<p>While it is true that sales people should commit their time and effort generating sales revenue, that may not be how customers perceive things. Customers want sales people to be &#8220;accountable for results&#8221;.</p>
<p><span id="more-134"></span>Hence, sales staff may make comments, or even overtures, to help improve quality. If a company has got a history of quality issues such as late deliveries, defects or missing parts, the sales staff of such companies will end up spending more time pacifying customers and taking steps (ranging from making complaints to literally monitor the production process) to ensure quality.</p>
<p>Also, if a company has problems maintaining consistent quality, or if the product is not really attractive to customers, it will adversely affect sales results as well.</p>
<p>So while it really shouldn&#8217;t be the job of the sales person to ensure quality, there are times that inputs from sales staff about our product features, service levels and quality standards are invaluable insights of what customers&#8217; expectations are.</p>
<p>If management&#8217;s concerns are that if sales staff spends too much time on product issues and not enough on selling, then perhaps management should consider getting operations, engineering or other staff to handle customers&#8217; feedback.</p>
<p>If the operations staff are hiding away from customers, or if there&#8217;s no one else to address product quality issues, then sales people will have to take on the role of &#8220;quality inspection&#8221;, NOT because they like to do so, but that&#8217;s how customers expect them to do so.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>I feel this is a question that many average performing sales people neglect to ask themselves on a continuing basis. It amazes me how many salespeople believe they know what their prospect is thinking without any real attempt at fact finding or for that matter, any basic questioning!</p>
<p>So with this in mind, let&#8217;s start with your purpose as a salesperson &#8211; to assist your customers in solving a problem they have. Contrary to what you feel about this statement, there is enough evidence and research now available that suggests customers want to buy products and services, not be sold to. So initially, your prospect will want to know your answers to the following questions -</p>
<p>1. Do you fully understand the problem/s I have?<br />
2. Do you have a solution to these problem/s?</p>
<p>You may laugh at how basic these questions are; however, so many salespeople get this so wrong and make very broad assumptions about prospects. Remember, every prospect will have a different set of needs and requirements. Another bugbear of customers is the complete lack of detailed questioning with a prospect. I recently saw this first hand at a car dealership I visited. It was a Saturday morning and next to me was a family of around 5 in total. The salesperson went up to the prospect and asked what sort of car the family were looking at. The father then proudly announced he was looking at the new estate (Station wagon for those of us in Australia and New Zealand). Then the salesperson went off on a complete tangent about a range of features without asking any questions. <span id="more-32"></span>This salesperson made an assumption that the prospect was looking for a car for his family when in fact; this guy was a vet and was looking for a sturdier vehicle as he was expanding his services to include some rural areas. At this stage I was totally bemused and enjoyed this immensely. After about 30 minutes or so, the prospect and his family decided to head off with some brochures in tow. This is but a simple example of how to totally get off on the wrong foot. By simply asking what the vehicle would be mainly used for, the salesperson would be able to suit his presentation to suit this particular prospect. Always remember that customers may also get confused so take your time here and really listen to what they say.</p>
<p>Once the salesperson has established the prospect&#8217;s problem it&#8217;s now important to link these issues to a solution you may be able to offer. Oh, and at this point, if you are able to offer a solution, don&#8217;t BS the prospect. Simply apologize for not being able to help them and maybe offer an alternative source where they may be able to help. So, assuming there is an opportunity to assist, here you need to be very thorough with your questioning by asking open questions that elicit open and detailed answers. Typical questions could include -</p>
<p>Â· Tell me about how we could assist you?<br />
Â· How has this problem affected you?<br />
Â· What other issues have you experienced?</p>
<p>These questions are so important as they guide you to understand the problems, focus your mind on what to present on and also entice some emotion from the customer. If you can find that little bit of emotion and really drive home some great questioning then chances are your customers will appreciate the time you&#8217;ve taken to understand their needs.</p>
<p>Now, you&#8217;ve questioned your prospect to understand the issues, and found an opportunity for your company to assist this person. It&#8217;s time to offer a feature / benefit conversation. When you offer a prospect some information please don&#8217;t do what a load of average sales people do &#8211; waffle endlessly about every feature known to man without any benefit statement. Offer the customer some key features that link to benefits that will fix their issues. Customers may ask for more information at this point; which is a sign that they are interested in what you&#8217;ve said and shown so far.</p>
<p>Another important aspect of what a customer will want to know is about you and your company. They maybe interested in the solution you&#8217;ve discussed but need to know they are dealing with a persona and company they can trust. This is another opportunity to bring out some case studies or testimonials that back-up what you say. Most customers don&#8217;t want to be guinea pigs with a new product or company. If you don&#8217;t have client case studies or testimonials then start compiling this today &#8211; make it a priority!</p>
<p>So to recap of some important key points -</p>
<p>Â· Always ask open questions to make sure you understand what the prospect is saying or asking.<br />
Â· If you believe that you can&#8217;t provide a solution to their needs, then move on &#8211; it&#8217;s best for the customer and you.<br />
Â· Don&#8217;t ramble on about technical terms and features that your prospect hasn&#8217;t indicated interest them. If they do so, then go for your life.<br />
Â· Keep asking questions until you&#8217;ve found that spot that will get them passionate about your solution.<br />
Â· Show the prospect how you&#8217;ve been able to assist others, perhaps with similar issues.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>This article is a simple piece of advice to add clarity and confidence to your sales and stop you working hard for a sale, doing well, and seeing the opportunity peter out.</p>
<p>The reason this situation occurs is because you can have a very good conversation with a prospective customer, be that over the telephone or face-to-face, get along well with them having built rapport, introduced your company fully and piqued their interest, only to leave the next step as a bit of an uncertainty. All too often sales people are &#8216;waiting to hear back&#8217; from those customers as they might have a requirement, &#8217;sometime soon&#8217;.</p>
<p>If a sale cannot be achieved at a particular point, you need to lay out a clear plan with the customer as to what will happen next. You both need to be fully aware of the next step and likely requirements in order for you, the sales person, to achieve your goal without simply putting the customer down for a follow up call every month to get a &#8216;yes or no&#8217; answer. If there is a level of interest but the requirement is not immediate, detail the following and you will be able to follow up much more effectively, by annoying your customer less and increasing the likelihood of closing that deal:</p>
<p><span id="more-58"></span>What will happen next &#8211; sales person to send a quote, wait for a call, another meeting involved other decision makers&#8230;</p>
<p>How &#8211; by phone, letter email, where for meeting?</p>
<p>When &#8211; prioritize the next phase when you have your customer in front of you or on the phone, getting that commitment is key.</p>
<p>When is the requirement likely to be &#8211; as specifically as possible (if it&#8217;s in six months time you don&#8217;t need to call every month!)</p>
<p>What are the customer&#8217;s other options &#8211; who else are they getting quotes from, how likely are you to be chosen for that piece of work?</p>
<p>Your customer is able to express their preference to each of these, don&#8217;t just decide for them but encourage them to make a decision on each aspect so that you are both singing from the same hymn sheet. Smile and shake hands, they might not have bought just yet but they have agreed with you as to what will happen.</p>
<p>The very best sales people are those who can make things happen. By following these steps you are ensuring that you are doing your utmost to move things in the right direction and secure the business ahead of the signing of any contracts. Months of waiting around only to miss out can now be avoided!</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Dale Carnegie said that the sweetest sound a person can hear is his own name. True, for the most part&#8211;when used appropriately by the right person at the right time. Conversely, in some cases, a person&#8217;s name can be a turn off.</p>
<p>At the grocery store I frequent, the check-out personnel are apparently instructed to call customers by name when they read them on the credit or debit card receipts. Nice intention, bad execution. Maybe once out of 100 trips the person has gotten close to saying mine correctly. It&#8217;s actually quite comical how they struggle, then butcher it.</p>
<p>And it still floors me, the ignorance of many people when hearing a difficult or unusual name on phone calls. In talking to sales or service people on calls where I was the customer, after spelling my name, I&#8217;ve heard such idiotic comments as,<span id="more-1293"></span></p>
<p>&#8220;Oh, that&#8217;s a weird one.&#8221;</p>
<p>&#8220;That&#8217;s a strange name.&#8221;</p>
<p>And some people just burst out laughing.</p>
<p>What do these dolts think? That I&#8217;m going to say, &#8220;Yeah, I know.&#8221;</p>
<p>I personally don&#8217;t stay up nights fretting over this. Mine IS an unusual name. (It&#8217;s pronounced Sob&#8217;-check.) I&#8217;m used to it. Hey, to top it off, my first name is Art. Think of how many times I heard &#8220;Art Fart&#8221; while growing up, or, &#8220;I bet Art is your favorite Sub-JECT (yuck yuck).&#8221;</p>
<p>People can be such morons.</p>
<p>But the name issue is a very tender area for some. And it says a lot about the person making the comment. I don&#8217;t mind if, after saying or spelling my name, a fellow Pole makes a commiserating comment like,</p>
<p>&#8220;I&#8217;ve got you beat. My name is Wojtkewkowski.&#8221;</p>
<p>Otherwise, it&#8217;s really out of place to make inappropriate comments.</p>
<p>If someone with an unusual name takes the lead, and pokes fun at it himself after spelling it, it&#8217;s certainly OK to react in some way. I make a point to spell my name, SO&#8211;BC-ZAK. Then I say, &#8220;I used to start out with &#8216;SOB&#8211;&#8217; but too many people commented on how descriptive that was.&#8221;</p>
<p>That breaks the ice and elicits some laughter and small talk. The safe rule: absent of their self-deprecating comment, say&#8230;nothing.</p>
<p>I took a call from a guy, and he very slowly recited his name: &#8220;Buddy Bunne.&#8221; And he pronounced it BUN-EE. Like a little rabbit (but he didn&#8217;t say that). I admit, I bit my lip and paused&#8211;you could almost feel him bracing for the anticipated wiseguy response. &#8220;And your address, Buddy?&#8221;, I continued, not commenting on the name.</p>
<p>Pssst, here&#8217;s a secret. Those of us with unusual names already KNOW our name is different. Some of us good natured folks just blow off comments with humor. But others view their name as sensitively as they would if they had a third ear protruding from their head. You wouldn&#8217;t comment on that, so why take a chance of offending someone?</p>
<p>Here are a few tips for you:</p>
<p>1. Here&#8217;s a website where you can enter names and hear an audio with the pronunciation: http://www.pronouncenames.com/. You can also add pronunciations that you know to be correct, and perhaps variations of others.</p>
<p>2. Best yet, before reaching the prospect, ask someone at the prospect&#8217;s company how to pronounce the name. (And please, do NOT say, &#8220;What is the correct pronunciation of Bill&#8217;s name?&#8221; Like you are looking for the incorrect way to say it?)</p>
<p>3. Also ask others how the prospect prefers to be addressed. Robert, Bob, Mr. Smith, etc.</p>
<p>4. Do not rename them. Use their name the way it is written, and the way they say it when they greet you. For example, one of my customers, David, said that people will often call him Dave even after he answers the phone with &#8220;This is David.&#8221;</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>I&#8217;ll give you a hint: It&#8217;s not their fault. CSO Insights conducted a study of 1800 sales executives and found that sales people only spend 37% of their time selling. Can you believe that? I can.</p>
<p>The sales process is designed with sequential steps that, if followed, should lead to qualification of an opportunity either &#8220;in&#8221; or &#8220;out&#8221;. If qualified &#8220;in&#8221; the next steps should lead to the sale. The sales person should have multiple deals working at the same time each following the steps of the sales process. That sounds simple enough, doesn&#8217;t it?</p>
<p>Sales people rely on the support of their entire organization to allow them to achieve the customer satisfaction that will ultimately result in the &#8217;sale&#8217;. And, yes you guessed it, the &#8217;sale&#8217; will lead to the achievement of company revenue and profit targets.<span id="more-1279"></span></p>
<p>If there are obstacles preventing the &#8217;sale&#8217;, the true nature of the sales person will mean that s/he will try and fix the issue which in turn will take them away from spending time with the customer OR if the sales person is a top performer you will lose them if you make life too difficult for them.</p>

I think I have a pretty good idea what the common obstacles are which inhibit a sales person from selling. But I never cease to be amazed by some of the stories I hear. They come in all shapes and sizes:</p>
<p>Â· You know the deal is qualified, why is it a harder sell internally than to the customer?<br />
Â· Why doesn&#8217;t my CRM system help to drive sales?<br />
Â· Why is my technical support person great with Visio, but terrible in front of the customer?<br />
Â· I thought you said we could deliver it 2 days?<br />
Â· How can I be strategic when I have all this day-to-day BS to deal with?<br />
Â· etc, etc, etc</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Let us assume that your business has fallen off or stood still in the last few months &#8211; after many years of continuous growth. If you are asked the reasons for this slump, do not immediately reply &#8220;It is the fault of the recession&#8221;. This is the common response from many delegates attending sales training courses.</p>
<p>Without doubt, the stormy situation in the general economy has a considerable effect on your business. Explanations such as &#8220;reluctance to buy&#8221;, &#8220;solvency difficulties&#8221; or &#8220;political uncertainty&#8221; are mostly only half the truth. If your business is regressing it may also be due to your sales force, to methods of acquisition, to the way they work.</p>
<p>Do your salespeople treat regular customers too routinely or too casually, because they think that their business is safe? Do they tell customers that they are happy with the business they have received so far, instead of working to extend it? Examine business from the most important customers over recent years. Where is there less business? Where is the business standing still? Analyse negative developments carefully. Consider the skills of your sales people, when was the last time they received sales training?<span id="more-1195"></span></p>
<p>How much business have you lost in the last few years by customers deserting you? Has the business which was lost been made up for by business from new customers? Intensify efforts to win new clients. Devise a plan to get new business. Set a monthly target of business to be gained from new customers for all your sales staff.</p>
<p>Do your salespeople mainly call on major and unproblematic clients? Do they neglect medium sized and difficult customers? Do they spend more time in town than in the country? With the help of your turnover statistics, lists of customers and purchasing power data, analyse the structure and potential of your customers.</p>
<p>Are things like routine (gaps in journey planning), comfort (no nights away from home) or private interests having a disadvantageous effect on the way your salespeople work a specific area? Examine the way they work. Systematically outline their route plan and the places where they make calls, on a map. Encourage them to try to improve their journey plans and try to save mileage.</p>
<p>Are your sales people in the habit of &#8220;churning out&#8221; their sales talk without enthusiasm? Have their powers to convince and inspire the customer slackened or disappeared completely? Urge them to review their sales presentations, update their negotiating skills and take their will to achieve carefully in hand.</p>
