Social media has taught me many things. Like how most #blackouts in Australia are caused by #zombies. Or that sometimes it’s more amusing to watch a reaction to a clip instead of the clip itself. But more importantly it has taught me that no matter how technologically evolved we become, some things never change. Here are 4 truths that I believe social media has demonstrated beyond a shadow of a doubt.
It’s all about relationships
Sex might sell but don’t be fooled – most customers are looking for more than a one night stand. We’ve spent years introducing technology to cut out the middle man only to find that the customer still wants to talk about their feelings. Businesses who choose to nurture an ongoing relationship reap the benefits with higher $$ sales, repeat business and free advertising in the form of word of mouth. Too many businesses are content with just playing the numbers game, safe in the knowledge that their flashy and slick approach will still dazzle enough customers to keep them warm through winter. Those customers quickly move on once they realise they’re not much more than a statistic, worthy only of bland, generic marketing campaigns with little thought to their actual wants or needs.

As part of an integrated marketing plan, social media is the online marketing element that can best be described as the new word-of-mouth marketing. In the past consumers didn’t have any control over marketing messages but new technology gives consumers power by allowing them to decide which brands they want to engage with.
This shift in power makes it vitally important for brands to entice consumers to want to engage with them. Social media present brands with the opportunity to engage with consumers and get them to spread the brand message. When this is done correctly, social media can turn brand ambassadors into brand evangelists.
With so many platforms available anyone with Internet access can become a publisher through networks like Facebook, Twitter and so many others. Consumers can publish their opinions, experiences and thoughts whilst choosing who they want to interact with. Thus, social media gives consumers the power to have their voice heard.

We are in the thick of autumn. It’s almost time to “fall back†and change our clocks for Daylight Savings Time. It’s also the time of year when many public safety and fire departments advise people to replace the batteries in their smoke and carbon monoxide detectors. Aurora Information Technology, a medical marketing company based in Garrison, New York, also asks doctors and healthcare providers take a look at their websites as well to see if their message and marketing may need a recharge, or even a replacement.
Aurora IT believes that a marketing update is important for doctors to consider whether they already have a website, or are considering creating one. For doctors with existing websites, six months in the market is a long time, and much can change. With emerging scientific discoveries and technology, the medical information on their sites may already be out of date, or at least in desperate need of a revision. The same holds true for their photos and videos. Even their search engine optimization (SEO) keywords may need a second look. Life and business move that fast.

The patient will see you now. Yes, doctors and healthcare providers, the tides are shifting. Patients who want information and want it fast are turning more and more to the Internet. They are talking to people on blogs, forums and message boards before they even call your office. Because doctors can’t be everywhere at once, they should be harnessing the power of the World Wide Web to work for them. Aurora Information Technology, a medical website design and medical marketing company advises that doctors and healthcare providers need to ride the wave of this trend and start spearheading these searches and conversations.
A customized website that is both interactive and educational is a valuable marketing tool. Yet some practitioners might be too “old school†to adapt to this new way of treating patients. The advertising of yesteryear has changed. According to a PRWeek article, (“Healthcare communications needs to get more personal,†Bob Pearson, October 1, 2009), “how people consume content is trending toward video, yet we still place most of our focus on creating new written copy.†Effective outreach efforts now encompass both offline and online media.

it seems that a lot of big companies today (with big marketing budgets) have managed to jump right into social marketing and successfully use sites like Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube in their everyday marketing activities. However, it also seems that small businesses are lagging behind the social marketing trend, even though it is a very low cost marketing channel that almost any small business can afford (the sites are free to use; all it typically costs is time!).
So why are so many small businesses hesitant about social marketing, or seemingly scared of using social networking sites as part of their regular marketing activities?
It could be as simple as not having the time to take on a new marketing activity, or maybe a lack of familiarity with sites like Facebook and Twitter makes them seem hard to use. It’s also possible they’re concerned about negative comments showing up on social media web sites, or worried about employees using these tools appropriately for business. Whatever the reasons, social media marketing is here to stay, and small businesses are going to have to face their fears if they hope to leverage its value as a marketing tool and stay relevant with their customers today.

If you have any online presence at all you have probably heard that you need to be on Facebook, Twitter, MySpace or YouTube because if you’re not, you are missing the boat.
So what is all the hoopla about? How is telling everyone what I’m doing right now going to help promote my business? What should I write about? What if I’m new in business and I don’t have anything earth shattering to say?

A few months ago I came across something very interesting and ground breaking, as it relates to chiropractic marketing. Not having a firm grasp of what I’m about to share will hurt your marketing efforts, more specifically when it comes to putting videos out and trying to get mass exposure.
As I dug down a bit in the world of social media and search engine optimization (SEO), I uncovered that Google began to use speech to text conversion. Quite simply, it means that they are extracting the spoken text from your videos, then converting it to regular text.
While I was doing my chiropractic marketing research and homework, I couldn’t find out (from their mouth) why they were doing that. But, the answer is quite obvious in my opinion. When it comes down to it, Google is always searching for relevant content. This is the main reason they now use your spoken words to categorize and rank your video, regardless of what video sharing network your video is on.

Getting involved with social media is very much like hosting a party. The goal for you and your guests is to have fun and to do this you need to get everyone mingling and chatting. Above all you must be an exemplary host.
As a good host you have to ensure that there are plenty of drinks and an adequate amount of food. Transpose this to a Social Media scenario, you should be open, respectful, invite debate and provide content such as copy, downloads, wallpapers, videos to fuel the conversation and give your guests more to talk about.

Ok so here we go. Get ready to take your game to the next level.
1. Become a search major ninja. You must search to be successful in social, and knowing all the specific Google operators can help you get to what you need for your marketing efforts fast (such as content creation that requires research).
2. Unfollow those who don’t add value or aren’t important to your network. This tip isn’t for a brand or company seeking to make themselves accessible to the world at large, but for you as a marketer personally. How many times have you logged into Twitter, Facebook or FriendFeed – even just after a few hours of being away – and felt totally lost in the conversation. Unless you’re going to devote your life to watching the stream, make sure that who you’re following is actually worth your time.
