Part of the beauty of Twitter is that it can be many things to many people. As part of my effort to recruit as many people to Twitter as possible, I decided that I should write posts about how Twitter can be used in different situations. For example, of course you can just use Twitter to make plans with your friends, but the interactivity of Twitter can be very useful for people in all sorts of different professions. I’m going to attempt to come up with as many different uses for it as I can and I’m going to start with the one I feel (for better or worse) qualified the most to talk about: using Twitter to promote your band or music.

Your Fans Really Do Care What You’re Doing

Believe it or not, if you’ve been making music for a while, you’ve probably accumulated a not-insignificant group of fans who are interested in what you do on a daily basis. These are the fans that download all your songs (whether you want them to or not), go to all your shows and buy all your t-shirts. Every band has these, no matter how long you’ve been around or how bad your music is. These are the people that you can cater to with Twitter.

suggest updating at least twice a day. Once when you get up you should post what you’re going to be doing that day, whether or not it’s related to your music, and once when your day is done to let them know how it went. Believe me, if Cedric and Omar from The Mars Volta or Daft Punk were on Twitter, you better believe I would be following them and would get super excited whenever they updated, even if it was just to let me know that they were eating a bowl of Cheerios.

Promoting Your Shows

Twitter can be an extremely effective promotional tool because you can ask people to come to your shows on several different occasions. If you are booking a tour, I suggest updating on Twitter when the dates are finalized and linking to the posted dates on your web site. Also, the day before the show, as well as the day of, you can update reminding everyone to come out to see you.

If you have enough fans and followers, you could make them feel extra special by having exclusive shows or afterparties that you only mention on Twitter. Once your fans find out that you are having these secret events, they will start following you on Twitter, thereby increasing your reach.

Take Requests

Since Twitter makes it so easy to interact with your fans, why not ask them what they want to hear when they come to your show? Maybe you’ve been neglecting to play an old fan favorite. Twitter is an easy way to find out what your fans want to hear, straight from the source. All they have to do is either direct message you or reply to you using the @ symbol.

Twitter-Exclusive Downloads

Say thank you to your biggest fans by giving your Twitter followers the heads up on exclusive new songs and videos. Posting a link on Twitter and NOT your web site says that you really value your fans enough to give them something special. Of course, once word gets out that you have a new song available for download, your non-Twittering fans will download it, but your Twitter followers will feel special because you gave them the heads up first.

Get Instant Feedback

Not sure if that hook you’re writing is trash or gold? Post a clip on Twitter and if you have enough followers, you’ll get instant feedback in minutes! Jason Calacanis, founder of Weblogs Inc. and Mahalo, uses it to get feedback on new designs for Mahalo. Sure, you could say that the fans should have no impact on the music you make, but if you want, you have an instant focus group that has your best interests at heart, wants you to succeed and would love to have you take their feedback into consideration.

Twitter-Exclusive Contests

This falls along the same lines as taking requests via Twitter, except it’s more fun. You could create a contest in which they plug your new song or upcoming show in one of their updates and that enters them into a drawing where the winner gets free tickets to an upcoming show in their area. You get free promotion, they get to come to your show for free and their followers check out your new song. It’s a win-win for everyone involved.

This is really just scratching the surface of how musicians can leverage Twitter to build their brand, increase their audience and get more people to hear their music. I’m sure as time goes on and more and more bands adopt Twitter the way they did MySpace, we’ll see some really innovative ways to use Twitter, but these ideas should be enough to get you started. Good luck and follow me on Twitter!

1. Post updates about your event website/online registration
When you set up a Twitter account for your event, make sure to enter your event website into the URL section. Your website will be visible on your profile at all times. Keep your followers updated about changes, for example when you have added your event agenda to your website, or when the dates and times of tasks are due. Include relevant links (event website or online registration page) every time, so your followers can easily read and find such information

2. Offer special deals
A good way to create noise and buzz about your event

3. Ask for feedback and ideas from followers
Delegates appreciate knowing they have contributed to an event so they get the most benefit from paying to attend. Twitter is a great way to do this. You can also poll for answers to get feedback to help shape content

4. Post real content that is significant
Twitter provides ongoing information and it needs to be interesting and relevant for people to engage and be inspired. This will create discussion between you and your delegates who will look forward to your updates

5. Monitor your event using Twitter
Creating the buzz will invoke readership and responses by your followers. Twitter is about sharing and creating discussion, so make sure you keep track of what’s being said about your event and join in the conversation. It can be as simple as answering a question about a logisitc change such as letting users know about a workshop time chang

Twitter has emerged as one of the most powerful social networking tools. Twitter is the home for many hip hop artists around the word. Even though Twitter is fairly new, there are already hip hop artists such as Sean ‘diddy’ Combs who had success with marketing on twitter. However, there as also been quite a few people who have made some mistakes when it comes to branding themselves on twitter.

I have compiled a list of the 10 most frequent mistakes hip hop artists make while using twitter:

Adding too many people at one time. So you want to brand yourself, yet you’ve got 50 people following you, while you’re following 2,001? How does that really portray you? If not only makes you look extremely desperate but it also shows that you’re not on twitter to build relationships with people, only to gain a vast amount of followers in order to spam them with your links. Take it slow, let the follows come naturally.

Bad photo. Using photos of inanimate objects on your avatar or profile picture, even worse-not using any profile photo at all. People feel more comfortable interacting with people online when they know that they are communicating with a real person.

Posting nothing but totally random drivel daily. While this could work if you are only using the network to connect with family and friends, if you are using Twitter for business then you should post meaningful messages that can help you grow your brand. You can post promos, updates, and links to articles that provide value to people within your network. You can also post humorous tweets and other more personal tweets just make sure that they are interesting.

Using the default twitter layout. If you are a professional and want to be seen as so, take a few minutes to either create information packed twitter background, or at least something with some style. Who knows, you might even get featured in an article about twitter layouts and end up gaining a lot of subscribers because of it.

Carrying on long conversations between two users. The temptation to use Twitter like an IM service is there, but to fill a timeline with replies to a single person in a short span of time is aggravating enough to make other followers reach for the unfollow button. If you sense your convo will drag on, use direct messages, or better yet, just call the person the phone.

Not making regular Twitter updates. If you want to gain followers on Twitter, you need to post updates or tweets at least once a day. You can’t expect people to follow you if they see that the last message on your feed was posted a month or two ago.

Failing to add yourself to twitter directories. You want to gain followers but you don’t add yourself to places to be found. Directories such as Blacktwitters.com and Hiphopontwitter.com or powerful places to add yourself and be found by twitter users. Blacktwitters is a twitter directory for African American twitters.

Tweeting famous people. Nothing looks more obscured then to see unknown hip hop artists tweeting things to Jim Jones like “I sent you my mixtap but you didn’t respond.” This makes you look bad to your network and it’s unprofessional.

Selling in your tweets. You want to tell people about your brand? Do it in your bio. Put your URL there and leave it at that. Focus your time and creating quality filled tweets. If they like you, they’ll look into what you do because they enjoy what you’re saying and believe you are a valuable source, not just someone who spams the twitter world with random “buy the hot song” tweets.

Dising other hip hop artists. Internet beef are super weak. Beefing with other hip artists on twitter is just dumb.

Although Twitter continues to gain acceptance in the business community as a business communication and marketing tool, I’m still amazed at the number of small businesses that don’t see the value of using this micro-blogging service as a marketing tool for business.

Just in case you need a refresher, Twitter (www.twitter.com) is a unique micro-blogging tool that lets users communicate with their “followers” in quick text messages of 140 characters or less called “tweets.”

Social networking sites like Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, and YouTube are typically most effective when they are appropriately integrated with each other and with a company’s existing marketing efforts, since each one provides distinct benefits and advantages in an integrated social marketing plan. But Twitter – even when used as a stand-alone social networking strategy – can be a powerful tool in any small business marketing toolbox.

Some of the benefits of using Twitter in your marketing mix include:

Highly targeted audience: The people who choose to “follow” you on Twitter are already interested in hearing what you have to say, or they would not have followed you to begin with. This provides you with an audience of folks who have specifically opted-in to receive your messages and want to listen to what you have to say.

Instantly reach your “followers”: When you post something to your Twitter account (referred to as “tweets”), the message is instantly sent to your followers in the way they have chosen to be contacted. This could be a text message sent to their cell phone, posted to their Twitter page on the web, RSS-fed to a Facebook page or profile, etc. Regardless of the method your followers have selected, your tweets appear within a few seconds.

Generate traffic to your web site: By adding links in your tweets, you provide followers with direct access to your web site, to other social networking profiles, to your blog, etc. Again, if your social marketing has been properly integrated, all of this will lead back to your web site, generating more traffic and new visitors.

Improve your search engine rankings: By optimizing your Twitter profile (and integrating your social marketing efforts), you can build valuable inbound links to your web site, which is key in improving your site’s position in the search engine rankings.

Increase brand awareness and online visibility: Being active on Twitter gets your business name in front of customers as well as the general public everyday, which in turn helps build name recognition and improves brand awareness for your business.

Enhance customer service: Many businesses have found that by using Twitter, they can respond to customer needs (or complaints) very quickly and efficiently, allowing them to improve their level of service while publicly demonstrating their responsiveness and commitment to customers.

Manage your online reputation in real time: By monitoring Twitter for mentions of your business name, key personnel, product names, etc., you can keep track of what people are saying about your business and to respond or intervene quickly if necessary. There are also free tools available to help you monitor your reputation in Twitter (like Twilerts and Tweetdeck), which can make it very easy to monitor your reputation online.

These are just some of the ways in which Twitter can benefit your business, and as social networking continues to grow in popularity, there will surely be even more features, new uses, and business benefits to be gained by using Twitter.

Whether you are just thinking about using social marketing or have already started to use it, Twitter can be a great tool to integrate into your social marketing strategy as you go forward. And for small businesses that are serious about marketing, the value of Twitter is pretty clear.

Maybe you haven’t been told this but traffic doesn’t simply come to your site after you have built it. You have to direct traffic to it. There’s hundreds of ways of doing this and the more ways you use the better.

New Internet Marketers are unfortunately left out in the cold when it comes to traffic generation. Gurus inform Newbies what to do but many times, don’t inform them of the HOW, WHEN or WHERE. Sometimes, I hate to say, that is on purpose. Personally, I cannot see the sense in it as there is plenty of Internet out there to go around!

The way Twitter works is, normally if you follow somebody, they will more than likely follow you back. This is what we want happening BUT we want to ensure that we get targeted followers. The only way you can do this is by being picky about who you follow first.

Being picky about who we follow just means that you only follow those who you would want to follow you in return. Don’t just go willy-nilly and follow everybody that is in Twitter, unless of course, the product you are selling on your website is so generic that it is something everyone would want. Which is most likely not the case.

So we do what is called selective following which means that you only follow those who you wish to have following you back. You wouldn’t just go crazy and follow everybody that is in Twitter, unless of course, the product you are selling on your website is so generic that it is a product that belongs in everyone’s home. Which is most likely not the case.

it seems that a lot of big companies today (with big marketing budgets) have managed to jump right into social marketing and successfully use sites like Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube in their everyday marketing activities. However, it also seems that small businesses are lagging behind the social marketing trend, even though it is a very low cost marketing channel that almost any small business can afford (the sites are free to use; all it typically costs is time!).

So why are so many small businesses hesitant about social marketing, or seemingly scared of using social networking sites as part of their regular marketing activities?

It could be as simple as not having the time to take on a new marketing activity, or maybe a lack of familiarity with sites like Facebook and Twitter makes them seem hard to use. It’s also possible they’re concerned about negative comments showing up on social media web sites, or worried about employees using these tools appropriately for business. Whatever the reasons, social media marketing is here to stay, and small businesses are going to have to face their fears if they hope to leverage its value as a marketing tool and stay relevant with their customers today.

If you are one of the millions of small businesses afraid of jumping in to social marketing, here are five good reasons you should overcome your fears:

Your customers already expect it – More than 86% of consumers recently surveyed by marketing agency Prodo said that they believe companies should incorporate social marketing into their regular marketing activities. Add that to the fact that Facebook now has more than 300 million users, Twitter has experienced quadruple-digit growth this year alone, and more than 50% of online Americans use social networking sites on a daily basis, and you can clearly see where your customers are spending their time. Put simply: you need to be there, too.

Social marketing has become mainstream – Think back a few years to when many small businesses didn’t have web sites yet. They thought “sure, it would be nice to have a web site, but it’s not really necessary for my business.” Now, of course, most small businesses have at least a basic web presence, and web sites are considered a standard part of doing business. The same is happening today with social marketing, and it won’t be long until it is considered just as standard as having a web site.

It doesn’t have to take a lot of time – When implemented properly, social marketing can be a quick, easy marketing activity that can be seamlessly blended with your regular marketing activities. By integrating your social networking profiles with each other, with your web site, and with your existing marketing initiatives, you can minimize the time spent on social networking while maximizing the return on your investment. It’s no longer an option to just do nothing – if you need help developing a social networking strategy, find a professional to help you.

Your message can reach a vastly larger audience – By using social marketing, you increase your reach online to potentially thousands (or millions!) of people who may not otherwise have a chance to see your message or know your company. Rather than waiting for visitors to find your web site and discover your business, social marketing allows your message to travel further through the social channels you use, as well as through viral events where people share your information with their own networks of friends and associates.

Ignoring social marketing will not make it go away – Like it or not, social marketing is quickly becoming the way in which smart businesses connect and communicate with their customers and potential customers. It not only improves a small business’ web visibility, but can also improve search engine rankings (Google already includes results from social sites, blogs, videos, and other alternative media along with regular web site results), and can help create “buzz” about a small business as well.

So if you have been apprehensive about adding social networking to your marketing mix, there’s no better time to face your fears and get serious about using this technology to enhance your online presence, reach new prospects, and meet your customers’ expectations with social marketing. The longer you wait to jump in, the larger the gap grows between “outstanding” and “overlooked”.

Do you belong to any social networks? If you do than you already know that these sites can be a lot of fun. Not only will it allow you to catch up with some old friends from school, but you can meet all sorts of people.

Social networking is a big thing to many people. It allows them to advertise their web sites and makes sales. But it’s also just nice to be in touch with people who sometimes you have a lot in common with.

Not everyone that you meet on these social networks is going to be nice though. You will run into a few odd people here and there. But there are ways that you can avoid talking to these people. So don’t worry if you find that you have a stalker on a social network. You can end that very quickly.

There are even many businesses and even TV shows that now have sites on these social networking spots. Twitter, MySpace, FaceBook, Joyde and so many more of them are out there. It’s a great way to even just promote yourself.

People who are a normal Joe or Jan will have sites too. As well as many famous people who have sites. It’s just kind of nice to read up on your favorite actor or actress to see what’s going on with them.

But it’s also nice because it brings you together with so many different people. People who are all over the world. Learning about other cultures and just anything that you may want to know about. It’s all possible on many of these sites.

Just a good way to have a lot of fun too. You don’t even need to be a serious person who checks these spots each day. Go every once in a while and catch yourself back up.

If you have any online presence at all you have probably heard that you need to be on Facebook, Twitter, MySpace or YouTube because if you’re not, you are missing the boat.

So what is all the hoopla about? How is telling everyone what I’m doing right now going to help promote my business? What should I write about? What if I’m new in business and I don’t have anything earth shattering to say?

First and foremost, don’t worry, just be your self. All the social media sites have one important thing in common, the reason they exist is for people to connect, learn and get to know each other. It is no different than going to a Rotary Meeting or the local Chamber of Commerce dinner other than you don’t have to make up some excuse to walk away from that boring person who is hogging the conversation, and no one has bad breath.

Like any social gathering, your purpose is to make connections and find people you like who might also like you and want to do business with you. How does this help your business? People always prefer to work with people whom they know, like and trust. That is what you are trying to accomplish. Let people get to know you so that they will like and trust you.

Do not try to sell anything on social websites. Here’s why, just imagine you and I are at a party. I have a beer. You have a drink. You say hey I think I heard about you, what have you been up to? Then I say “Buy My Stuff”. So you ask what my business is about, and I say “My business is at this address, you can go there and look around, I won’t be there but you can buy my stuff”. How well do you think that will go over? That is the equivalent to just sending people directly to your web sales page from social media. It’s not a good idea.

Provide good value. Give helpful information. Share a link to a good website. You can let people know about your website if there is something they will find interesting. Let everyone know about a book you just read or a movie you really enjoyed. These things will cause people to want to follow you on Twitter or befriend you on Facebook.

As you build your online reputation people will get to know your name, who you are, and what you do. After a while they will want to know more about you and your business. As your online presence grows, so will your search engine rankings. The big plus is that all of your sites will begin to rank higher including your website and when people arrive at your site they will already know about you and maybe even like and trust you. This will make it much more likely that they will buy from you. Don’t chase them. Let them come to you. These are all principles of attraction marketing and this is the best way to use social media to grow your business.

Yes, well here we go again, another one of those, I’ve got a list of over “9,000? Twitter followers so I’m a social media expert marketing forms has hit my desk today. Come along it says, “to my affiliate marketing driven roadshow and in 4 hours I’ll make you the expert, but there’s more, if you sign away your hard earned money right now, i have an e-book special for you, yes just for you, an E-Book that I didn’t write by the way,but I’ll pretend its mine, and all it will cost you is $89.00.”

I get emails like this every day, offering free product that I can sell or give away as my own, I get E-Books, money making ideas and lots of materials that I can re-brand, that’s not being an expert, that’s a faker.

These so called experts all have massive numbers of followers on social media sites like MySpace and Facebook and of course Twitter, and they fool you to part with your money.

Well don’t fall for it, because I’m going to tell you how to fake it, and then you too can be the instant social media expert, you know, the one who can’t get a job selling real estate so they opt for this easy money.

Ok this is how you do it, On MySpace and Facebook, you find as many people with similar names or interests as you and then send them friend requests, a lot will decline but you would be surprised at the number that actually come back and accept you, that way you build up your following very quickly, they never do anything with you but hey it builds your numbers. Next Twitter, there are a number of programs that will show you how to build big follower numbers and it’s funny but it’s nearly always around the 9000 mark. You can do the same with Twitter as you do with MySpace and Facebook, that is follow large numbers of people and I’ll guarantee you a fair number will follow you back, and you know the dead giveaway? look at the follower number next to the following number, that they can’t hide.

I know of one expert that actually sends out his flyers with “I have 9000 followers on twitter” so I must be good, well one thing he doesn’t tell you is he follows over 10,500. If you really want to get serious with this, have a look at the Twitter accounts with large followings, 99% of them are well known actors, celebrities or business people, so what does that tell you.

I have always taken the tack that to build a social media following you should earn it, build it on providing good quality information and advice and create the “Expert” tag through experience and generate your followers organically not by underhand means and faking it.

There are so many “snake oil” sales people out there you really need to hang on to your wallet.

So next time you get a flyer or an invite, stop and do some research first, the web and Google are a great place to find out information on your expert. How many articles have they had published?, where do they rank on Google?, What recommendations do they have and what companies have they worked with in designing and integrating a social media strategy. For example, I’ve just done a search on social media experts, and this person I’m telling you about doesn’t even rank on the top 20 pages.

Is this sour grapes? no, I just don’t like rip off artists who pray on people like you.
